Responsible Gambling

Marie Curie promotes responsible gambling

Marie Curie is committed to ensuring that our raffles, prize draws and Weekly Lottery are operated in a secure, fair and socially responsible way and to endorsing responsible gambling amongst our members.

We are also committed to financially supporting efforts to tackle problem gambling, through our membership of the Lotteries Council, which makes a contribution to the Responsible Gambling Trust on behalf of all members. The Responsible Gambling Trust raises funds to support its research, education, and the treatment of problem gambling.

In order to promote socially responsible gambling, Marie Curie places a limit on the number of tickets that can be purchased for each of the gambling products based on guidance from the UK Gambling Commission.

Please see our Responsible Gambling Policy for further information. These policies are continually informed by sources including, but not limited to, Gambling Commission updates.

How to enjoy responsible gambling

Most people gamble responsibly but the following tips may help ensure that you keep your gambling under control.

  • Set yourself a strict budget and a time limit.
  • Remember that you are taking part for fun but NOT as a means of investment.
  • Only gamble money you can afford to lose.
  • Quit when you are ahead.
  • Don’t spend money hoping to win back any that you have lost.
  • Don’t gamble from stress or boredom.

How to identify if gambling is becoming a problem

For a few, gambling can become addictive. If you are worried about the amount you are spending or you are concerned that a friend or relative is developing a gambling habit, seek help before it becomes a problem.

The danger signs are when:

    • others start to criticise your gambling
    • you lie to cover up how much time or money you are spending on gambling
    • you are starting to gamble when there have been arguments, frustrations or disappointments
    • you gamble alone for long periods
    • you stay away from work or college in order to gamble
    • you are gambling when you are bored or unhappy
    • you are reluctant to spend gambling money on anything else
    • you are losing interest in family, friends and your other pastimes
    • you feel despair when you have run out of money and have the need to gamble again
    • you have lied, stolen or borrowed to obtain money to gamble
    • you feel depressed because of your gambling

If you recognise any of these signs, it is likely a problem exists.

Generally, as raffles and the Weekly Lottery are low-stakes gambling products, and there are restrictions on how many tickets you can buy, we are unlikely to see these characteristics in supporters. These outlines are built around general gambling products and are more applicable to people who go to betting shops or to casinos. However, the same principles apply.

On the rare occasions where suspected problem gambling behaviour is identified, Marie Curie investigates fully into the nature of these purchases.

Remote gambling

This includes gambling online, via interactive TV or by mobile phone. Here’s some advice about gambling remotely:

  • Remind yourself that it is real money you are spending and keep track.
  • Keep a watch on the time you spend playing.
  • If you are a parent, keep your password safe and consider using software to block children’s access to the site.
